Kildee outraged at House Republicans for stripping protections

of all women from the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization

(Flint) – Dan Kildee expressed his outrage today as Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee chose not to take up the bill that passed the Senate with bi-partisan support. Instead extremist House Republicans have introduced a bill that removes protection for Native American women, immigrants and members of the LGBT community.  Kildee is the Democratic candidate in Michigan’s 5th Congressional District which encompasses all of Genesee, Bay, Iosco and Arenac Counties, part of Saginaw County – including the City of Saginaw – and part of Tuscola County.

“Republicans should not be in the business of picking and choosing which women can be beaten and where it can take place. We should protect all women from violence, “said Kildee.  “It’s outrageous that they’ve turned something as bipartisan and affective  in terms of reducing violence against women as the VAWA into a political weapon in order to satisfy extremists in their own party.”

Kildee has worked to collect support for a VAWA reauthorization that protected all women against violence through an online petition at http://www.dankildee.com/vawa-petition/ .  The language of the petition is as follows:

We the undersigned urge immediate passage of S.1925 and H.R. 4271, which strengthen the Violence Against Women Act. The effort to strip VAWA of enhanced protections for Native Americans and members of the LGBT community is unacceptable. It is unconscionable that in the United States these crimes continue to go unpunished. We the undersigned stand with all women.
