Michigan’s largest environmental organization cites Kildee as environmental “champion” that is needed in Congress

FLINT – Clean Water Action (CWA), Michigan’s largest environmental organization, today endorsed Dan Kildee in Michigan’s 5th Congressional District, which encompasses all of Genesee, Bay, Iosco and Arenac Counties, part of Saginaw County – including the city of Saginaw – and part of Tuscola County. CWA has over one million members nationally and 250,000 in Michigan and is concerned with our environment, health, economic well-being and community quality of life.

“When it comes to protecting Michigan’s environment, Dan Kildee is a champion who is committed to protecting our state’s water resources, ” said Cyndi Roper, Michigan director of Clean Water Action. “His innovative ideas, including the land bank model, have been adopted across the nation and helped to revolutionize the nation’s land use to protect our environment. Clean Water Action is proud to endorse Dan and look forward to working tirelessly to elect him to Congress.”

Throughout his career, Kildee has proven to be a steward of the environment, including Michigan’s Great Lakes. As Genesee County Treasurer, Kildee worked with the Michigan state Legislature to create the Genesee County Land Bank. A first of its kind in the nation, the land banks goals were to clean up communities of vacant and abandon structures. He also supported protecting our national parks and forestlands as well as preserving Michigan’s wilderness areas.

In addition to CWA, Kildee on Tuesday announced the support of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy group. Kildee also has received endorsements from several of Michigan’s labor organizations, including the United Auto Workers (UAW), American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 25, United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), International Union of Operating Engineers (IOUE) Local 324, Michigan Laborers’ District Council, Michigan Nurses Association, Office and Professional Employees International Union, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, and the Communications Workers of America.

“I am proud to have the support of Clean Water Action and its hundreds of thousands of members across Michigan,” said Kildee. “Born and raised in our beautiful state, I understand the importance of protecting our water resources, especially the Great Lakes. When I am in Congress, I will fight to strengthen our nation’s environmental protections and support a clean energy economy. Embracing renewable energy technologies will not only power our clean energy future but also create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs that we so desperately need.
